Rec: Where to eat/drink in Newport, RI

Writer's picture: Jenna ruhlJenna ruhl

My sister just had her bachelorette party in Newport, RI and it was an amazing weekend filled with good eats/drinks, fun bars, and great atmosphere. Here are some recs on where to eat and drink there!

Large party dinner:

Surf Club

Surf Club was a great spot with an awesome interior and large booths for bigger parties (we were 23 girls and split up into two booths right next to each other!) The drinks were phenomenal. I suggest the SPICY WATERMELON MARGARITA (fresh watermelon, blanco tequila, serrano pepper, triple sec, sour). Some other girls got the SUMMER SPRITZ (Aperol, Grapefruit Liqueur, Fresh Lemon, Sparkling Rose) and loved that as well. We got some pizzas to start. The prosciutto & arugula and the blanco pizzas were our favorites. (They do make gluten free crusts, however, they weren't as good as the regular obviously). Other than that, the ahi tuna tacos and the bowl options were great.

Perro Saludo

Perro Sauldo was real authentic Mexican food with hints of seafood. Given we were a big party, we got the top floor of the restaurant to ourselves and had a price fixed menu. It was $35 or $45 PP depending on which entree you pick. That price came with multiple appetizers (guac & chips, pork raised ribs, fried avocado etc), the entree, then churros for dessert. I chose the lobster tacos and I kid you not it was my favorite meal in a while (favorite meal in Newport). The tacos had so much flavor and they melted in your mouth. Pro tip: It is hard to drink heavily after eating here so maybe plan this dinner on a night you are not trying to go out after.

Other Dinner Recs:

Clarke Cooke House

This is an adorable spot right on the wharf with views of the water and the little downtown area. I was dying to go here because I heard such great things but unfortunately they could not accommodate such a big party like we had - but when I go back, Clarke Cooke House is my first stop!

The Lawn at Castle Hill

This is a must-do in Newport. It is a beautiful spot with white lawn chairs, a stunning view of the water and sailboats passing by with great cocktails. We came here for before dinner drinks and it worked out perfectly. You can take pictures on the lawn and get cocktails without having to sit down for dinner. From my research, many chose to do just drinks here, however they do offer dinner for smaller parties (smaller than 23 that is).

The Mooring & Midtown Oyster Bar

Both The Mooring and Midtown Oyster Bar are seafood restaurants that we tried going to but again couldn't because of our size. These are more upscale options but were recommended to us when we were researching.

Going out:

The Landing

This was our favorite bar by far and we went here multiple times. It is right on the water and they have live music all the time and multiple floors with areas to dance/hangout. (Beware there was a $20 cover when we went Friday night). We went here for Sunday Funday after we got off our boat cruise and it was such a fun time we stayed till 10 pm.

The Black Pearl

The outdoor bar/seating area at the Black Pearl is in the heart of Newport and Bowens Wharf. It is a perfect spot to grab a drink and watch the sailboats in the marina. They are known for their mudslides which were amazing!

The Deck

This is a cute spot right on the water with great views. We came here after the bar and got appetizers and drinks. The aperol spritz was larger than my head and amazing as was the mudslide.

One Pelham East (Dueling Piano Bar)

This was a great spot for bachelorette parties. If you book in advance you can get a table but we ended up just getting tickets (free) to get in and got drinks without a table. There were two amazing pianists dueling with everyones song recs and it was so cool to watch.

Grab and go:

The Drift Cafe

We ended up eating here more than once because it was close to our hotel/shopping area and it was delicious. They had great smoothies, breakfast sandwiches and wraps. Definitely recommend stopping here for a quick breakfast.
